Falmouth Volleyball Takes Down Sandwich In Five Games
By: Rich Maclone
It would have been easy for the Falmouth High School volleyball team to overlook Sandwich High. The Lady Knights are in the first year of their program, at the varsity level, and most first-year varsity teams hit the ball under and into the net as much as they do over it.
The Knights are an atypical first year team, though. Sandwich has its share of legitimate players, and they showed that they’re just about ready for prime time already by giving FHS all it could handle on Wednesday evening in Sandwich.
It took a come-from-behind effort, over five games, for Falmouth to pull out a thrilling victory over Sandwich. FHS won the opening game, then dropped the next two before rallying all the way. Falmouth prevailed in five by scores of 25-10, 22-25, 19-25, 27-25 and 18-16.
“I’m very proud of the way that they played,” Head Coach Michelle Gregory said. “Since I’ve been coach, this is the first time we’ve been able to pull out a match like that one.”
Gregory said that her captains led the way in the victory. Junior front line player Marianna Moore had a great outing, collecting 12 kills to go along with 5 blocks, 3 aces and 2 digs. “She was so good that I just left her out and never took her off the court,” Gregory said. “I let her play the back row, she was just great.”
Fellow captain Holly Shanahan had a nice game for FHS, especially at the service line. Shanahan was perfect in serve percentage and came up big when her team needed it most. Falmouth’s other captain, libero Tiara Vaughn, had an exceptional match on defense, coming up with nine digs.
“We had some shaky moments, but we found a way. The bench was very helpful,” Gregory said.
Setter Kyra Martino moved the ball around very well, picking up 19 assists in the match. She also had four kills. Senior Amanda Stavlo had a breakthrough performance, Gregory said. The hitter had seven kills in the match. “That’s the fiercest I’ve seen her at the net. She’s finally hitting that next level.”
