Falmouth Golfers Aiming For State Tournament
By: Rich Maclone
It’ll be trial by fire for the Falmouth High School boys’ golf team when it opens up the season against one of the best teams it is likely to face this afternoon at Cape Cod Country Club in Hatchville. Coach Rich Mason’s team, which has many new faces on the squad, squares off against their rivals from Barnstable to open up the 2013 campaign today.
While today’s match is sure to be a tough one, the Clippers have a solid group of players that will be vying for playing time. The top of the lineup is rather solid to start the year, but the rest of the spots in the starting rotation are very much up for grabs.
Falmouth’s lineup features seniors Jake Beaton, Robbie Souza, and John Robinson at the top, with junior Andrew Parkinson and sophomore Sam Newman. Coach Mason expects that group of five to figure heavily into the team’s plans, with the order of where they fit into the mix is yet to be determined.
The other three regular spots are there for the taking, and Mason said that his rotation will probably have plenty of flux, especially early on, and that who gets the most playing time will be determined by the scores that the vying players post.
In the mix will be two seniors, Zack Denmark and Kyle Hampton. Juniors John Silvia, Jordan Jensen, Jesse Borgese, Eric Demers, Arlin Moore and Kevin Cahill are in contention as well. Sophomores Brent Taft and Sam Walker will be vying for varsity spots, as well as freshman Matt Cole, a solid newcomer.
“We don’t have any real standouts, but we’re solid. I’m hoping we can play consistent and qualify for the state tournament, continue to improve each match,” Mason said. “They’ll force each other to pay well. I think that they’ll all push each other to get better, and the competition within the team will be good.”
