Mashpee Accident Leads To MedFlight To Boston

A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in an accident on Route 28 in Mashpee shortly before 7:30 AM this morning.
Christopher Van Gelder, 42, of Mashpee, was flown by MedFlight helicopter to Tufts Medical Center in Boston, after his motorcycle veered into oncoming traffic, striking a vehicle near the intersection of Sampsons Mill Road.
According to preliminary police reports, Mr. Van Gelder drove around a pickup truck that had stopped on Route 28 to let a car exit from Sampsons Mills Lane. The motorcycle went around the stopped traffic and into the oncoming lane, striking a car driven by Mark K. Rozum of Mashpee, who was uninjured in the accident.
As of 10 AM, a spokesman for Tufts Medical said that Mr. Van Gelder was still receiving emergency treatment. The hospital was unable to provide additional regarding the victim's condition.
Mashpee Police Chief Rodney C. Collins said that the accident remains under investigation
