It has been 10 weeks since a majority of the Barnstable Town Council voted to shorten the contract of Barnstable Town Manager John C. Klimm.

This morning, he said, he will sign the document that cuts short his five-year contract.

“I never wanted to leave. I don’t want to be in a situation that is counter-productive or unproductive,” he said.

He also left open the option for a return if the political climate shifts and he is asked back.

“If their attitude changes, then I’m most open to continuing with the council,” he said.

His last day will be December 15, Mr. Klimm announced this morning in a press release. His previous contract had him serving to June 30, 2015.

Mr. Klimm said he will give the signed amended contract to Barnstable Town Council President Frederick Chirigotis of Centerville today for Mr. Chirigotis to notify the town council, whose next meeting is Thursday, September 8.

The decision renders moot two items on next week’s council agenda, one to give Mr. Klimm until November 15, after the town election, to decide whether to sign the amended contract instead of what was, in effect, a September 30 deadline.

The other item on the agenda was a “re-affirmation” of the earlier vote for the short contract.

The re-vote has been put forward by James H. Crocker Jr. of Osterville, who was chairman of the committee formed to write the amendment to shorten Mr. Klimm’s contract.

Mr. Crocker has pushed for a new vote and has said he might change his vote after members of the public said that the original vote was not fair to Mr. Klimm.

Town Councilor Henry C. Farnham of West Barnstable attempted to place a third item concerning Mr. Klimm’s tenure on next week’s agenda.

Mr. Farnham wanted the council to do an early job performance evaluation of Mr. Klimm this month.

The town charter and Mr. Klimm’s contract both stipulate the evaluation is to be done in December, and so, Mr. Chirigotis said, he would not add the item to the agenda.
